The name itself is a mystery wreathed in clouds. It might mean Mountain of Light, Mountain of Greatness or Mountain of Caravans. Or it might not. The local people, the Wachagga, don’t even have a name for the whole massif, only Kipoo (now known as Kibo) for the familiar snowy peak that stands imperious, overseer of the continent, the summit of Africa. Park size: 755 sq km (292 sq miles).
Kilimanjaro, by any name, is a metaphor for the compelling beauty of East Africa. When you see it, you understand why. Not only is this the highest peak on the African continent; it is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, rising in breathtaking isolation from the surrounding coastal scrubland – elevation around 900 metres – to an imperious 5,895 metres (19,336 feet).
Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, a beacon for visitors from around the world. Most climbers reach the crater rim with little more than a walking stick, proper clothing and determination. And those who reach Uhuru Point, the actual summit, or Gillman’s Point on the lip of the crater, will have earned their climbing certificates. And their memories.
But there is so much more to Kili than her summit. The ascent of the slopes is a virtual climatic world tour, from the tropics to the Arctic. Even before you cross the national park boundary (at about 2700m), the cultivated footslopes give way to lush montane forest, inhabited by elusive elephant, leopard, buffalo, the endangered Abbot’s duiker, and other small antelope and primates. Higher still lies the moorland zone, where a cover of giant heather is studded with otherworldly giant lobelias. Above 4,000m, a surreal alpine desert supports little life other than a few hardy mosses and lichen. Then, finally, the last vestigial vegetation gives way to a winter wonderland of ice and snow – and the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.

NOTE:
Climb slowly to increase your acclimatization time and maximize your chances of reaching the summit. To avoid altitude sickness, allow a minimum of five nights, preferably even more for the climb. Take your time and enjoy the beauty of the mountain.
Mount Kilimanjaro is the crown of Tanzania. Although just 3 degrees south of the Equator, the peak of Kibo has permanent caps of snow and ice, rising at 5895 high and is Africa's rooftop and the world's highest freestanding mountain. The mountain rise abruptly from the open planes to form the snow capped peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi, which are frequently fringed by clouds. Different routes can be followed on Kilimanjaro Mountain in attempt to reaching the roof of Africa. The most popular routes are Machame and Marangu. Depending on trekkers’ travel plans, climbing this mountain takes between 5 to 8 days to get to the top. Trekking through Marangu route require a minimum of five days while Machame route require a minimum of six days. It is always advisable to have a day for acclimatization.

Day 01: Avresa från Sverige

Day 02: JRO - Arusha (45 minutes – 1hrs.)
Accommodation: Ilboru Safari Lodge
Meal Plan: Half Board Basis
On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, (Please look for the poster with your name on it), and transfer to Ilboru Safari Lodge for dinner and overnight. The lodge has a swimming pool so if you arrive early you can swim to get some relief after a long flight

Day 03: Arusha – Marangu Gate – Mandara
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meal Plan: Full Board Basis
Meet with Real Adventure Staff day before for formalities.
After an early breakfast you will be transferred to Marangu Gate where your trek starts. The actual hike begins at the park gate (6,000') and hike 5.5 miles up to Mandara Hut (8,860') near the upper edge of the forest line. The hike takes about 4-6 hours. The path is interesting, starting off through the rain forest vegetation, and then opening up to giant heather. If time and weather permit, a short walk from Mandara to Maundi Crater is worth it. Accommodations here, as well as at Horombo and Kibo, are in wooden A-frame huts that sleep 4 to 8. Overnight: Mandara Hut.

Day 04: Mandara –Horombo
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meal Plan: Full Board Basis
Today the destination is Horombo Hut at 12,200 feet. It is approximately 5-6 hours to cover the 10-mile journey, and here, you will often get your first views of Kibo summit. The trail is strenuous and slippery and takes you clear of the forests, and out onto the moorland, it continues past and beneath the rocky southern face of Mawenzi, one of the three volcanoes that make up Kilimanjaro. Rainfall in this region is not predictable. Overnight: Horombo Hut.

Day 05: Horombo – Kibo
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meal Plan: Full Board Basis
Another long hike, this time up to Kibo Hut at almost 15,500 feet. Although somewhat shorter in distance, this usually takes 7 hours because it is steeper and the altitude slows everyone down. The route passes directly up onto the Saddle, a wide, flat area with the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi looming overhead. Views from here can be fantastic. The last part of the trail passes across the arid plateau before ascending to Kibo Hut. Kibo Hut is a stone hut with rooms that sleep 10-15 people in bunk beds. You will have a light dinner, and turn in early for any sleep if possible. The guides give a little pre-climb talk after dinner. Overnight: Kibo Hut.

Day 06: Kibo Hut – Summit – Horombo
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meal Plan: Full Board Basis

Ascent–Descent:
We are awakened about midnight, and have tea and cookies. The guides try to get everyone ready to climb as quickly as possible, leaving between 1:00-1:30 am! Starting off, the trail swings back and forth up a steep scree slope and the climate is bitterly cold. The summit climb is an event you will never forget, with the night sky full of stars and only your breathing to help focus your mind. Most climbers arrive at Gillman's Point, elevation 18,635 feet, in time to enjoy sunrise around 6:30 a.m. The views from the top looking down on the plains of Africa make it all worthwhile. Some climbers decide that they have reached their goal and head down from here. For the strong, the true summit is Uhuru Peak (19,340 feet)-an additional 3 hours away round-trip. The descent from Gillman's Point is fairly rapid, taking about 2 hours. Most climbers take a short rest at Kibo Hut before descending to Horombo Hut for the night, arriving in the late afternoon. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 07: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Arusha
Accommodation: Ilboru Safari Lodge
Meal Plan: Hal Board Basis
Breakfast and continue your descend to Marangu gate and collect your certificates for successful trek.  You will then be transferred to Arusha for dinner and overnight at Ilboru Safari Lodge.

Day 08: Arusha - JRO
Transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for the onward flight

Day 09: Hemkomst

Tanzania

När ska man åker till Tanzania?
There are two rain seasons in Tanzania, one of long rains and the other short rains whereby these seasons are separated by dry periods. Usually the best time to visit is during dry periods or just after the rain season although in recent years there have been uncertainties in this trend, sometimes raining may not fall as when expected but otherwise.

Tanzania Dry Season
This season starts from June to October and from December to early March. This is a dry season and most dusty in Tanzania. This is the best time for Safari (there is less vegetation so animals are easily viewed), Climbing and Zanzibar Beach Excursions. During this season, there are many tourists flowing to Tanzania, as a result it may be difficult to get flights if not booked early and in that we recommend you book your flight (early) before booking for safari in Tanzania.
During October it rains but the rain doesn't fall continuously hence remain fantastic for safari although sometimes when the rain falls may disperse animals.
Tanzania Rain Season
The long rains fall from late March to late May and this makes the period considered not very ideal for wildlife safari, Mountain Climbing and Zanzibar Beach Excursions. It is fantastic to go for safari just after the rain seasons as the rain creates greenish vegetation so becomes much more beautiful and less dust.
Recommended Best Time
Except during rains, other periods are appropriate for safaris, climb and Zanzibar. However, for safari, we recommend late May, June, and November as in these months there are less tourists in Tanzania contrary to tourist peak months of July, august, December and January.
Note
Although the rain seasons are not well recommended as suitable for safari, yet not absolutely discouraged to visit only that one should prepare to meet the adventure challenge. The roads out of towns and those in the national parks are rough, so becomes quite slippery, rivers may overflow and stacking in the mud may happen sometimes.

Climbing, is doable during the rain seasons but it becomes not only less pleasant to climb and camp in the rain but also less visible and for that reason if you climb during rain season follow Marangu Route so as to stay in huts. However, you should prepare and pick your rain gear as the weather on the mountains is not such systematic so it may rain anytime even during dry season especially for Mount Kilimanjaro.
